"A Trip of a Lifetime" may be a trite phrase, usually applied to trips more mundane and not at all deserving of superlatives, but not this trip! This was to be an all-out, hang the expense cruise, covering a lot of South America. We, and few of our friends, had ever been to South America.
Photography took hold of me before color film, before 35-millimeter cameras and even before I could afford a real camera of my own. When I was a teenager some photo studios still used glass plates, some even used wet glass plates, and daguerreotypes and tintypes were still within our father's memory.
